Purpose:
This workshop will provide perspectives on resolving conflict in group work practice relevant to social workers and other human service practitioners. The workshop will explore common conflicts that occur in both the planning (e.g., co-facilitator disagreement, advocating for group needs) and implementation stages of group practice (e.g., member dominance, member disregard for ground rules). Additionally, the workshop will review conflict resolution models and skills, and facilitate experiential learning for participants to understand the conflict resolution process in group work.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the types and sources of conflict that occur in group settings
- Analyze several conflict resolution models (e.g., negotiation and mediation) and their associated skills.
- Practice resolving relevant conflicts, via role play, in preparation for applying skills to their professional group practice.
